It is about identifying the correct legal term in the target jurisdiction, which sometimes has no direct equivalent at all. A translator who is fluent in both languages but has no legal training will handle this by guessing or paraphrasing. That is how legal documents fail review.
Our legal translators are trained lawyers or legal professionals who added translation as a second discipline. They work in the specific areas they know: contract law, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, employment law. We do not assign a corporate contracts translator to a family law document and we do not assign a Swiss law translator to a UK court filing.
Switzerland presents a particular challenge in legal translation because the legal system differs across the German, French, and Italian linguistic regions. A contract clause that works in one region may have different implications in another because the underlying cantonal law is different. We flag these issues when we encounter them, rather than simply translating and delivering.
